Crowns

Treatment description

A crown is an aesthetic covering or a tooth-shaped “cap” that is placed over another tooth or implant to provide it stability. Crowns are generally used to improve the appearance, shape or alignment. Porcelain or ceramic crowns can be matched to the color of your natural teeth.

Veneers

Treatment description

A veneer is a thin covering that is placed over the front of the tooth. Veneers can correct a wide range of dental issues such as: to lighten front teeth that cant be whitened by bleaching, correct some cases of chipped or worn teeth, fill in uneven spaces or a large gap between the upper front teeth called a diastema. Veneers can be a conservative option to fix aesthetic concerns and insecurities.

Extractions

Treatment description

A dental extraction is the removal of teeth from the dental alveolus (socket) in the alveolar bone. Extractions are performed for a wide variety of reasons, but most commonly to remove teeth which have become unrestorable through tooth decay, periodontal disease, or dental trauma, especially when they are associated with toothache. Sometimes wisdom teeth are impacted (stuck and unable to grow normally into the mouth) and may cause recurrent infections of the gum (pericoronitis). There are many replacement options for missing teeth such as: Implants, bridge, partials, and dentures.

Root Canals

Treatment description

Root canal treatment (also referred to as endodontic therapy) may be necessary to save a tooth for a number of reasons: When a cavity reaches all the way to the pulp or nerve of the tooth and causes an infection. The infection can extend through the root and into the bone causing an abscess. Deep restorations or trauma to a tooth may also cause the nerve to be damaged to the point it needs a root canal.

Root canal treatment cleans out the infected pulp tissue and disinfects the canals. Once the infection is resolved, the canal(s) are filled in attempt to prevent any further infection. A core build-up and crown is recommended for restoring a tooth that has had root canal therapy.

Implants

Treatment description

Implants are small titanium posts, which are inserted into the bone where teeth are missing. These metal anchors act as tooth root substitutes. The bone bonds with the titanium, creating a strong foundation for artificial teeth.

Small posts are then attached to the implant, which protrude through the gums (called abutments). These posts provide stable anchors for artificial replacement teeth. Implants also help preserve facial structure, preventing the bone deterioration that occurs when teeth are missing.

Fillings

Treatment description

A filling is a way to restore a tooth damaged by decay back to its normal function and shape. When a dentist gives you a filling, he or she first removes the decayed tooth material, cleans the affected area, and then fills the cleaned out cavity with a filling material. By closing off spaces where bacteria can enter, a filling also helps prevent further decay.

Materials used for fillings include a composite resin (tooth-colored fillings), an amalgam (an alloy of mercury, silver, copper, tin and sometimes zinc), and sometimes porcelain.

Sedation

Treatment description

Sedation can be used to calm a person for a procedure. These drugs ease discomfort, pain, and anxiety. They are usually given through an IV line in your arm.

When a patient is sedated they need to make sure to not have any food or drink after midnight the preceding day. They also need to make sure they have someone to drive them to and from the appointment.

Dentures

Treatment description

There are different types of dentures, but they share their common function. They replace teeth that have been lost due to cavities or bone loss. The entire mouth is examined and a determination is made as to which teeth will have to be removed, and which will remain. Dentures are fitted to go over or around whatever teeth remain in the mouth, depending on the type.

There is an adjustment period after dentures are placed in the mouth, and it can take some getting used to. But once accustomed to the dentures, all the normal functionality and appearance return and one just carries on as usual. Implants can also be used to further stabilize the dentures.
